About the studio

When it comes to making your music aspirations come to life, By The Lake Studio is a one-stop shopping experience. Recording with me includes access to all of the following:

  • acoustic and electric guitar

  • violin

  • mandolin

  • banjo

  • vocals—bass, baritone, lead, and tenor

  • engineering

  • producing

I’ve played multiple instruments on hundreds of recordings, as well as singing bass, baritone, lead, and tenor vocals whenever requested.

I enjoy collaborating with artists—I’ve produced more than 50 records for a wide range of musicians.

I have 30 years of experience in recording, the last 20 have been with Pro Tools. As a player and producer, I view creating music similarly to creating visual art. With Pro Tools, I can paint music with an array of glorious colors. Anything is possible. This is as custom as it gets. My goal is to consistently raise the bar musically.

HOW IT WORKS

When you need an instrument on your song:

  1. You send me a song that needs an instrument such as fiddle or mandolin.

  2. I play to your track and send you examples.

  3. When you’re happy with the part, I send you a WAV file of the completed part to put together with your song.

When you need help crafting a song:

  1. You send me a song, even if it’s not fully realized.

  2. I work on it and wrangle it to a mutually happy place.

OR

  1. You send a song that you can play and sing to your own satisfaction (or we can record you playing and singing the song).

  2. I expound upon the basic tracks and produce a fully formed song to your satisfaction.

COST

$50/hour for producing and engineering

$75/hour for any three-minute musical part (includes engineering and producing).

GUARANTEE

I guarantee a satisfying product using any or all of my particular skills.

SAMPLES

“Waitin’ for the Thaw” was written by Adam Carpenter—a songwriter from Marquette, MI. I'm playing lead guitar, piano, mandolin, bass, drum programming, and singing harmonies.

“Chelsea Town” was written by Deb Mantel and is on her Uncaged Bird CD. Instrumentally, Deb only had a basic guitar part when she presented the song to me. We were able to work together and decided to add a number of instruments and a harmony part. On this song I played guitar, mandolin, accordion and bass. I also sang harmony.

“Angels” is a song written by Chuck Brodsky and performed by Katie Geddes on her CD, “e are Each Other’s Angels. Katie sang and I did everything else.
